< Back to News Home Huffmaster Racing secures 6 podiums in 6 races at IT Festival

Posted (08/21/2007) - Huffmaster Racing had a banner weekend at the recent Improved Touring Festival.

In a dual attack, Huffmaster Racing brought two Mazdas to the IT Festival. Entered in the ITS class was young gun Rob Huffmaster in the Mazda RX-7. Additionally, Ray Huffmaster was entered in the team's ITE class Mazda RX-8.

The weekend's events consisted of an early practice and qualifying session on Saturday morning. That was followed up with a Saturday afternoon race. Then on Sunday morning was a short qualifying race. The capstone was a Sunday afternoon finale race.

Ray Huffmaster had a fantastic weekend in the Huffmaster Racing RX-8. To say his weekend was perfect would not be an exaggeration. For all three races, Ray started on the Pole Position. And for all three races, Ray led from wire to wire to win all three ITE races.

"Its always great fun to come out to an SCCA Regional race weekend. The racing is good and the atmosphere is relaxed. I enjoyed racing in the RX-8 a lot. Winning 3 races made it even more fun. Although I think one of the most enjoyable aspects of the weekend was not on the track. We had a friend of our long time crew member come down for the weekend, Rick Kelley, who was a big racing enthusiast and he helped us out a lot with getting the cars prepared and ready for the races. Rick ended up becoming a SCCA member by the end of the weekend and plans on looking more into buying a car to race for himself. Now that is what SCCA racing is all about."
- stated Ray Huffmaster

Rob Huffmaster had a hard act to follow after the driving display from his father Ray. But Rob did not disappoint in the very competitive ITS class. The weekend started of with Rob qualifying on the pole for ITS and finishing a close 2nd place. In an attempt to continually tune the RX-7, Huffmaster Racing made some adjustments for the Sunday qualifying race. This resulted in some cording of the tires and a 3rd place finish. Further adjustments for the afternoon race saw Huffmaster Racing get everything right on. Rob quickly moved up from 3rd to 1st, leading the final 22 laps of the race on Sunday.

"After the ITS race on Saturday, I knew we needed to make some large setup changes. I called Shane Benson at AIM tuning for advice. We ended up making a sway bar adjustment for the Sunday morning race. It definitely made the car better, then in the afternoon, the team made a small rebound adjustment and put on a fresh set of Hoosiers which was the right combination to take the victory." - stated Rob Huffmaster

The objective of the weekend for Huffmaster Racing was to prepare for the upcoming fall American Road Race of Champions event to be held at Road Atlanta. In that event Rob will be driving the ITS class Mazda RX-7 and Ray will continue in the ITE class in the Mazda RX-8. In last year's event, Ray Huffmaster secured pole and won the Sprint race. And then he turned around and secured pole and finished 2nd in the Enduro race in the ITU classed RX-8. And Rob qualified and finished 1st in the ITS class Enduro race.

The next event for Huffmaster Racing will be the National at Gingerman on August 25th. Rob will be driving the team T3 class Mazda RX-8. The National season has been a good one for Huffmaster Racing. Even though Rob only needs to start the race to qualify for the SCCA National Runnoffs, the entire team will be gunning for victory in their home track race.

The Goal for the season is to qualify both Huffmaster Drivers for the National Runnoffs; Ray in D Prepared and Rob for T3. For the 2nd straight year, the 2007 SCCA National Runnoffs will be held at Topeka, Kansas at Heartland Park on October 8-14.
